The book emphasizes the importance of play. Billy does many different activities in the story, such as painting, playing with trucks, and playing a game of tag. Billy gets to use his imagination and have fun without electronic devices, which is a good message for readers that they don’t have to use their smartphones in order to have fun.
Throughout the book, Billy’s mom doesn’t scold him for making a mess. She makes sure he is in old play clothes to do the activities and helps him clean up afterward. This is refreshing to read and a reminder that kids should be able to get their hands dirty and not have to worry about trying to keep everything perfect. |

Vicky is a Children's Librarian at Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport, NY. She and her husband have two children and two cats.
